Choose backwards from how you will prepare it. Without gas or power, rations you eat straight from the pack are the safest bet, and NRG-5 and Seven Oceans need neither water nor heat. If you want hot meals, budget for a stove with fuel and something to light it from Fire starting, and count that fuel as part of the supply itself: freeze-dried meals are dead weight without it. For several people or longer periods, ration packs and long-life food are easier to manage than loose items. Pick food your household actually eats, and rotate it on a fixed schedule so nothing quietly reaches the back of the cupboard.
