Filtering without power

Gravity water filters

Countertop gravity systems with a large reservoir for use at home. Choose on daily output, household size and the rated life of the elements.

More about gravity water filters

A gravity water filter is a two chamber system: you pour water into the upper container, gravity pulls it through the elements and clean water collects below. No electricity, no mains pressure and no plumbing work, so it keeps running through a power cut or a supply failure. The elements hold back bacteria and protozoa down to 0.1 micron and are rated for anything from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands of litres. Capacity is far higher than on a backpacking filter, which is what makes it practical for a whole household.

Start with volume. A smaller unit covers one or two people, while a larger one refills faster and suits a family. Then look at the rated life of the elements in litres and translate that into years at your own usage. Consider the source as well: mains water, rainwater and surface water put very different loads on an element, and cloudy water clogs it faster, so let sediment settle before you pour. Pore size does not stop viruses, so keep water purification tablets alongside the system if your source is uncertain. For the first days after an outage, packaged long life water is the quickest answer.

Frequently asked questions

No. It runs on gravity alone: you fill the top chamber and the water works its way down through the elements. There is no pump, no plug and no connection to the mains. That is exactly why it keeps working during a power cut.
