Years on the shelf
Long Shelf Life Food
Freeze dried meals and tinned food that keep for years. Choose on shelf life, weight and how much preparation each option needs.
Long shelf life food is the layer underneath your everyday cupboard: food that keeps for years without refrigeration. Freeze dried meals are light and ready in minutes with hot water; tinned food and pouches are heavier but need nothing at all. Together they cover both a rucksack and a shelf at home.

Choose on three things: shelf life, weight and preparation. Freeze dried meals last longest and weigh very little, but they need water and a stove. Tins and pouches are heavier and keep for a shorter time, yet you can eat them straight from the container. At home a mix works best: a base of tinned food that you eat and replace as you go, with freeze dried meals behind it as the long term reserve. Put the oldest packs at the front and write the dates down. Do not forget water, because freeze dried food is useless without it.
Frequently asked questions
Sealed freeze dried meals keep for roughly five to twenty five years, depending on the brand and the packaging. The date on the pouch is what counts. Store them cool and dry and keep the seal intact, because once air gets in the shelf life drops fast.
