Clean water on the trail
Compact filters for hiking, camping and your emergency kit. Compare them on weight, flow rate and the litres each cartridge is rated for.
A backpacking water filter turns stream, lake or unknown tap water into drinking water without a stove. The filters in this category work mechanically: water is pushed through a membrane that holds back bacteria and protozoa down to 0.1 micron. They weigh very little and fit in a hip pocket, which makes them just as useful in an emergency kit as on the trail. Viruses are smaller than the pore size, so pair a filter with water purification tablets when you need that extra step.

Three things decide which filter suits you. The first is pore size: 0.1 micron is the common rating that stops bacteria and protozoa. The second is rated capacity, which varies enormously between models, from a few thousand litres to hundreds of thousands. The third is how you want to use it. A squeeze filter or straw is the lightest option and works straight off a bottle, a pump draws from shallow sources, and a hose filter can be built into a larger setup. Travelling outside Europe or drawing from water you cannot judge? Carry purification tablets as well. Spare cartridges, backflush syringes and hoses sit under water filter accessories.
For hiking and camping a squeeze or straw filter is usually enough: light, small and ready to use straight away. If you are filtering for a group or staying put for a few days, a pump or a hose based system is more comfortable. Also check the rated capacity in litres, because it differs sharply between models.
