Fire without matches
Fire Starting
Fire steels, firelighters and windproof lighters. Choose what still works in rain and wind, and always carry two methods.
You rarely light a fire with a single match when it is wet or windy. A fire steel throws sparks well over a thousand degrees and works straight after a soaking, firelighters burn long enough to dry out damp wood, and a windproof storm lighter keeps going in a gale. That combination is what belongs in an emergency kit.

Carry two ways to light a fire and keep them in different places. A fire steel is the most reliable base: it does not run out, it works wet and it lasts thousands of strikes. A storm lighter is quicker to use but can run dry or break. Firelighters or cotton wool with petroleum jelly sit in between, because sparks alone will not take damp wood. Practise with your ferro rod at home before you first need it in the cold and the dark. Keep tinder dry in a sealed bag.
Frequently asked questions
You scrape the supplied striker down the ferrocerium rod, which throws off hot sparks. Those sparks land on dry tinder such as a firelighter, birch bark or cotton wool with petroleum jelly. Scrape away from your body and keep the rod low over the tinder.
