Filters are the consumable part of a respirator and are classified with letters and numbers. The letters describe the substance group a filter is tested against: A for organic gases and vapours, B for inorganic, E for acid gases and K for ammonia. The number after the letter indicates capacity class, while P filters such as P3 are particle filters, and a combination filter holds both stages. The letters, class and connection that apply to a filter are printed on the filter and repeated in the product specification.

Start with the connection, because a filter that does not fit your mask is of no use. Many masks and filters use the common threaded standard while some brands use a proprietary bayonet; the connection is listed per model under Full face respirators and Half mask respirators. Then look at the type: ABEK covers four groups of gases and vapours, a separate P3 stage handles particles, and a combination filter brings both together. The number next to the letter describes capacity, not what a particular situation calls for, so keep reading the specification for that. Finally, watch the dates: an opened filter has a limited service life and a sealed one has a shelf life.
