Power banks
Compact batteries for your phone, head torch and emergency radio. Choose on capacity in mAh and the charging speed your device supports.
A power bank is the smallest step in backup power: enough to keep a phone, head torch and radio going for days, small enough to fit in an emergency kit or a coat pocket. Look at capacity in mAh, the number and type of ports, and whether the model does two-way USB-C so you can refill it quickly too. For higher output or a 230V socket, see the power stations instead.

For most people a model between ten and twenty thousand mAh is the best balance of weight and number of charges. Count on roughly two to four full phone charges per ten thousand mAh, because conversion always costs something. Also check the output: a phone is happy with eighteen watts, while a laptop often needs sixty watts or more over USB-C. If the power bank lives in an emergency kit, choose one that holds its charge well and top it up twice a year. Flying with it? Airlines set limits in watt-hours, so check the figure printed on the casing before you pack it in hand luggage.
Frequently asked questions
Ten thousand mAh covers two to three phone charges and stays light in a pocket. Twenty thousand mAh is the usual choice for a weekend or for an emergency kit serving several devices. To charge a laptop as well, look for USB-C Power Delivery of sixty watts or more.
