Choosing emergency rations for your supply

An emergency ration can supplement your food supply at home, in the car or on the move. Start with what is in the pack, how you use it and how much you want to store. Compare ingredients, allergens and the date on the label too. A number of packs alone does not tell you how long your household can rely on them.

More about emergency rations

Check the label of the version you order: net contents, energy content, ingredients, allergens and storage instructions. Use the date on your own pack to plan your supply.

Which pack size suits your supply?

  • Individual NRG-5: one pack contains 500 g and 2,300 kcal. The ration is ready to eat; no cooking is needed. View individual NRG-5.
  • NRG-5 box: 24 packs of 500 g each, giving 12 kg of the same ration. Check current availability on the product page. View the box of 24 NRG-5 packs.
  • Seven Oceans: distinguish an individual 500 g pack from the 3 × 500 g set. The linked set contains three separate packs. It is not a one-for-one replacement for one individual NRG-5 pack or a box of 24 packs: compare contents, energy content and ingredients. View Seven Oceans with 3 × 500 g.

Ration bar or meal?

A ready-to-eat ration bar such as NRG-5 needs no cooking. A freeze-dried meal may need water and preparation. Follow the specific product label: the amount of water, temperature and preparation time vary. Compare long-life food for other additions to your supply.

How much do you want to store?

Start with your household, the usable supplies you already have and the period you want to plan for. Add up energy content and portions using the labels, taking individual dietary needs into account. Days or months in a product name do not guarantee that a pack will feed your entire household for that long.

Plan food and water together

The Dutch Denk Vooruit campaign suggests 3 litres of water per person per day for an emergency kit covering the first 72 hours. That equals 9 litres per person for three days. See Denk Vooruit’s emergency kit list (Dutch).

Within your water plan, also check what your chosen meals need for preparation and how much water you need for other uses. Do not automatically count preparation water again on top of the baseline: assess your total use and preparation according to the label.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the product and batch. Check the date and storage instructions on your own pack; a general product name does not give a fixed remaining shelf life. Check your supply regularly and use older packs first.
