Choosing respiratory protection: fit and limitations
A respirator only works within its intended use. Understand filters, fit, maintenance and situations where it cannot protect you.
Buying a gas mask does not mean you are protected against an unknown hazard. The substance, concentration, fit and mask-and-filter combination determine whether respiratory protection is suitable. For workplace use, have a competent professional assess the risks and equipment.
Start with the intended application
A particulate filter is not automatically a gas filter. The filter designation must match the identified exposure, the mask and the manufacturer's instructions. A broad product name does not prove protection against everything. Read NIOSH's explanation of filtration and fit.
Understand when a filtering respirator is unsuitable
A filtering respirator does not supply oxygen. Do not use it to enter somewhere with unknown air quality, an oxygen deficiency or an immediately life-threatening atmosphere. During an incident, move to safety and follow emergency services. See NIOSH's limitations for air-purifying respirators.
Check fit and compatibility
A proper face seal is essential. Facial hair, spectacles or the wrong size can interfere with it. A check when putting on the mask is not the same as a formal fit test. Only use combinations of masks, filters and accessories permitted by the manufacturer.
Do not assume a universal filter lifetime
Storage and service life vary with the product and exposure. Follow your filter's expiry date, packaging requirements and replacement instructions. An unopened package does not make an expired product suitable. Do not set a replacement schedule using smell alone.

- A defined application and relevant certification.
- A suitable size and access to proper fit assessment.
- Instructions, compatible filters and replacement parts.
- Storage, maintenance and replacement requirements.
