How the Berkey Big works You fill the upper chamber with water from the tap, a stream or a rain barrel. Under the influence of gravity, the water flows through 2 to 4 Black Berkey filter elements to the lower chamber, where you draw clean drinking water from the spigot. No pump or power is involved. Black Berkey filter technology The Black Berkey elements remove bacteria and viruses (>99.999%), protozoa, heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium), chlorine (100%), pesticides, pharmaceutical residues, microplastics and various petrochemical substances.
