Water purification tablets: use and limitations
Check the correct Aquatabs label, understand why doses vary by tablet strength and know when you need a different water source.
Water purification tablets can disinfect water when the product and source are suitable. They are not a universal treatment for every kind of contamination. Keep the packaging and instructions with your supplies so you know exactly which tablet you have.
Check the exact product first
Aquatabs comes in different tablet strengths for different volumes of water. Instructions for one version cannot simply be transferred to another. Use a product intended for drinking water and follow its label for dose, mixing, waiting time and conditions. Read Aquatabs' product guidance.
Assess the source before treatment
Disinfection targets microorganisms. It does not remove salt, fuel or general chemical contamination. If you suspect these, find another reliable source and follow local instructions. The CDC explains which water hazards disinfection cannot solve.
Work with a known volume
Choose a clean container of known capacity. An unknown bottle size makes accurate dosing difficult. Treat cloudy water according to the product instructions; removing visible dirt is not the same as disinfecting the water. Keep untreated water away from clean surfaces and the drinking opening.
- Check the product, tablet strength and expiry date.
- Measure the water volume.
- Follow all instructions for this particular version.
- Mark when treatment started and when the instructions permit using the water.
Combining a filter needs a purpose
A filter may handle a different part of treatment. Check the organisms and substances each method actually addresses. Combining two products does not prove an unknown source is completely safe. Read about the limits of standard Sawyer filters too.
What should you store at home?
Start with reliable packaged drinking water. Tablets may be a useful addition when you understand their use and the intended source is suitable. Store them as labelled, out of children's reach, and do not swallow the tablets directly.
